DESIGNING FOR THE WAY COASTAL HOMES ARE ACTUALLY USED

When we’re designing a home in Wilmington or near the coast, I’m always thinking about how beautiful something is and how it’s going to live. Humidity, strong sunlight, sandy feet, wet swimsuits, pets, and kids are all part of coastal living, and pretending they don’t exist doesn’t make for good design.

We consider which rooms will take the most use and select materials accordingly. A formal space may allow us to use something more delicate, while the sofa everyone piles onto after coming in from the water needs to be a completely different conversation. Luxury doesn’t have to mean fragile.

Performance fabrics are something I recommend constantly for our Wilmington projects, and they’ve come such a long way. There are incredibly beautiful options now that don’t look or feel like traditional outdoor fabric. We can specify a gorgeous light-colored sofa that still makes sense for a family, or use performance textiles on dining chairs without everyone panicking when a glass of red wine appears.

For finishes, I’m equally thoughtful about natural materials and how they’re going to age. Sometimes a little patina is beautiful; deterioration isn’t. Understanding that distinction is important when you’re designing near salt air and humidity.

CREATING A COASTAL FEEL WITHOUT RELYING ON A THEME

I also don’t think a coastal home needs to announce that it’s coastal. You won’t see us filling a room with anchors, seashells, and everything blue and white simply because we’re near the water.

I would much rather create that feeling through natural textures, beautiful wood grains, woven materials, stone, linen, and a softer palette that takes its cues from the surroundings. Then we can layer in color where it makes sense. The result feels relaxed and connected to the coast without crossing over into a theme, and it gives the home much more longevity.

One thing I’ve noticed both through our work in Wilmington and during trips to High Point Market is that the coastal pieces with the most staying power rarely scream coastal. They’re simply beautifully made pieces in honest materials, such as great upholstery, interesting woven textures, warm woods, stone, and finishes with depth.

Trends will always come and go, but quality materials give you a foundation that can evolve. To me, that’s what great coastal design should feel like: you know you’re near the water because of the way the home makes you feel, not because the décor has to tell you.
